Each partner contributes unique expertise—from precision feeding and protein modelling to biosynthetic production and sustainability assessment—ensuring a holistic approach to developing next-generation proteins for animal feed. This collaborative effort combines cutting-edge research with real-world impact to reshape the future of sustainable livestock nutrition.

UPV - Leading Precision Animal Nutrition and Technology

Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) is one of Spain’s leading technological universities, renowned for its strong research capabilities. In recent years, its R&D&I activity has grown at an average annual rate of nearly 23%. The university also has its own science park, known as the Polytechnic City of Innovation. The Animal Feeding group (ANIFED) of the Institute of Animal Science and Technology of the UPV is the group responsible for coordinating SYNFEED project. One of ANIFED’s main research lines is precision protein nutrition for monogastric animals. The group is led by Dr. Juan José Pascual, the principal initiator of SYNFEED.

BSC - Supercomputing Power for Protein Modelling

Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) is a leading research institution specializing in high-performance computing. It hosts MareNostrum 5, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and plays a key role in advancing computational science across disciplines such as Life Sciences. Within the SYNFEED project, the Electronic and Atomic Protein Modeling (EAPM) group at BSC contributes with its expertise in the theoretical modeling of biochemical and biophysical processes, including protein engineering. EAPM's main focus is on the integration of machine learning with molecular modeling, both to develop novel approaches and to apply existing methods to specific biological systems.

INRAE - Pioneers in Cell-Free Biomanufacturing

The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAE), is a leading public research organization dedicated to developing sustainable solutions in food, agriculture, and environmental health. Within INRAE, the MICALIS Institute specializes in microbiology and biotechnology. It hosts the Cell-Free Biofoundry, led by Prof. Faulon, as part of the Paris Biofoundry, which aims to accelerate the development of sustainable biomanufacturing through cell-free technologies. In addition to its cell-free initiatives, JL Faulon’s research team also develops computational tools and experimental protocols for bioproduction, biosensing, and biocomputing.

WUR - Unraveling Digestive Physiology and Nutrient Utilisation

Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is a collaboration between Wageningen University and the Wageningen Research foundation. Its mission is: ‘To explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of life’. The Animal Nutrition Group aims to provide a fundamental understanding of nutritional processes and the effects of dietary compounds on the health, performance, welfare or longevity of farm and companion animals. We develop knowledge on the utilisation of (anti-)nutrients in feed and feed ingredients and their impact on the animal. We follow dietary nutrients as they are broken down (digested and fermented), absorbed, and metabolised by animals. Core areas of our research are feed processing technology, digestive physiology, nutrient metabolism and requirements, the interaction between nutrients and gene expression, and mechanistic modelling of nutrient utilisation.

DTU - Circular Engineering Solutions for a Sustainable Future

Technical University of Denmark (DTU) develops technology for people.
