Objectives

The main aim of Synfeed is to demonstrate that it is possible to develop synthetic proteins that can generate a radical paradigm shift in the way we feed animals, highly reducing both livestock’s environmental impact and the external dependence on raw materials of the European Union.

To achieve this goal, and using poultry as a model, Synfeed will pursue the following specific objectives:

• To generate new knowledge in precision nutrition in broiler chickens that allows for redefining the target proteins.
• To model protein candidate sequences that meet the project pursued conditions.
• To generate the candidates' library of proteins using cell-free production technologies, and to evaluate them.
• To optimize the biosynthesis process through fermentation of the selected protein from sustainable sources through second-generation microbial production systems.
• To demonstrate that the synthetic protein is an alternative to the current protein sources in broilers.
• To conduct an integrated evaluation of the Synfeed solution using Life Cycle Assessment.
